Westerly officials believe arson destroyed house

WTNH Connecticut News

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — A vacant Westerly house damaged by floods four years ago has been finished off by a fire.

Westerly fire officials believe the blaze that destroyed the vacant house on Sunday and spread to an adjacent commercial property was arson.

The Westerly Sun reports that the fire started in the house and spread to the commercial building. Overhead utility lines were damaged, causing power outages.

The intensity of the blaze damaged other buildings nearby.

The town owns the property, which was damaged when the Pawcatuck River overflowed in 2010 floods.

The house will likely be torn down as part of a project already being planned as part of Westerly’s efforts to revitalize the area.
